How to learn the Alexander Technique

Learnt through direct experience and observation, the Alexander Technique aims to increase your self-awareness and help you to discover a different and better way of functioning. Given the uniqueness of individual needs most people find one-to-one lessons the most effective way of learning the technique.

Using simple everyday activities such as sitting, standing, bending and walking, whilst your teacher uses gentle hands-on guidance and verbal explanation, you learn to identify and stop harmful habits, release unnecessary tension and move with greater freedom and ease. Applying your new skills and understanding to more demanding and complex activities as you progress you learn to bring improved poise to everything you do. Lying down in the classic Alexander Technique semi-supine position is often included in lessons, this gives maximum support and relief for the back. (The technique is often used by actors, musicians, sportspeople etc. to enhance performance.)
